Description

Unknown Local Kentucky Garlic

I found this beautifully large hard neck garlic at a local produce stand here in Casey County 3-4 years ago.  The Mennonite owner told me he had bought it from a farmers market a couple of counties over. It was marked as organic, but he doesn’t know the variety’s name or the producer. Probably Amish grown.

It took me several years of growing it back to back before it finally sized up for me to the size that I had originally bought it at. I don’t know if it was luck, persistence, weather, or it finally acclimated to my land, but this year, 2026, I had the best bulbs ever.

Until I can grow a lot more of this, it will be in short supply. I need to keep the 40 to 50 biggest and best bulbs for myself.

Bulbs tend to have 4 to 10 large cloves that are reddish purple in color.  I believe most hard necks prefer cooler areas than the heat and humidity we have in Kentucky. So you northern growers will do well with this variety!

Culinary

A hot and spicy garlic when raw, it cooks up sweet and creamy.  Definitely a keeper for me!
