A hot and spicy garlic, this is touted as one of the BEST garlic varieties to dry and make your own garlic powder.
This heirloom variety has more than a 100 years of history. Its flavor can be described as deep, rich, and complex. Like more hard necks, it prefers to grow in areas with cold winters.
Due to a very wet season here in Kentucky this year, a lot of my hard neck garlic did not have enough time to size up. Spanish roja did better than others, but still gave me about 50/50 when it comes to seed size and culinary sized bulbs. I keep it around because the bulbs store well, and it makes GREAT garlic powder. I find the smaller the bulbs the better they store.
Quantities listed are for bulbs over 1.75" If you want smaller bulbs, they are listed as culinary bulbs and will measure less than 1.75" across.
